New Britain, CT - The Wagner women's basketball team (8-19, 5-10 NEC) fell to Central Connecticut State University (10-18, 9-6 NEC), 76-65, Saturday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium.
Graduate student Julia Fabozzi led the way for the Seahawks with 19 points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes, despite fouling out. Sophomore Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor recorded her fourth straight game in double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds, while graduate student KC Carter added 11 points in just 13 minutes of action.
Redshirt-sophomore Klea Kaci knocked down a right-wing three-pointer to give Wagner an 8-7 edge with 5:38 left in the opening quarter, but CCSU responded and held a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes.
The Seahawks gained momentum in the second quarter, shooting 66.67% from the field and taking a 25-24 lead with 5:47 remaining. Wagner extended its advantage to seven points on two occasions, but CCSU closed the half strong to reclaim a 40-39 lead at the break.
The Blue Devils carried their momentum into the second half, building an eight-point cushion heading into the final quarter, 58-51. Their lead grew to as many as 18 in the fourth as they secured a 76-65 victory over Wagner.
Up next, the Seahawks return home to host Stonehill on Senior Night, with tip-off set for 7:00 PM at the Spiro Sports Center.
Prior to the game, Wagner will honor graduate students KC Carter, Taleah Washington, and Julia Fabozzi for their contributions to the program.
With one game remaining in the regular season, the Seahawks currently sit seventh in the NEC standings ahead of the NEC Tournament quarterfinals on March 10.
