Women’s Basketball Edged By Stonehill

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team (8-20, 5-11 NEC) concluded its NEC regular season schedule, falling to Stonehill (15-14, 11-5 NEC), 68-60, at the Spiro Sports Center, Thursday night.

Prior to the game, graduate students, KC Carter, Taleah Washington and Julia Fabozzi were honored for their contributions to the program for senior day.

In the effort, Washington led the way with 22 points along with five rebounds and four assists. Fabozzi added 15 points and seven rebounds while freshman Keana Foz scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Seahawks started strong, with Taleah Washington drilling a three-pointer to give Wagner an early 11-3 advantage with 6:39 left in the first quarter. However, Stonehill responded, closing the gap and tying the game at 13-13 by the end of the period.

Wagner regained momentum in the second quarter, stretching its lead to 27-21 with 5:17 remaining in the half. Stonehill gradually chipped away, but the Seahawks held on to a slim 29-28 advantage heading into the break.

Keana Foz opened the second half with a layup for Wagner, but Stonehill answered with a strong push, building a 41-35 lead with 4:32 left in the third quarter. The Seahawks battled back to reclaim the lead, taking a 44-43 edge into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Stonehill gained control, pulling ahead 51-45 with 6:54 remaining. Wagner fought back once again, cutting the deficit to one after a clutch three-pointer from Julia Fabozzi at the 4:17 mark to make it 51-50. The Seahawks kept pressing and briefly went in front, 57-56, after a Washington free throw with 1:19 left. However, Stonehill responded with free throws on the next possession to reclaim a 58-57 advantage. Wagner struggled to convert down the stretch, while Stonehill capitalized at the free-throw line to secure a 68-60 victory.

Although both teams finished with 32 rebounds, Stonehill made the most of its opportunities at the line, sinking 22-of-26 free throws compared to Wagner's 12-of-16. The Skyhawks also outshot the Seahawks from beyond the arc, connecting on four more three-pointers.

With the regular season now complete, Wagner enters the NEC Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 2 seed Stonehill once again on Monday, March 10, at 7:00 PM in Easton, MA. The Seahawks dropped both regular-season meetings against the Skyhawks. The last time Wagner appeared in the NEC Tournament in 2023, they entered as the No. 5 seed but fell to No. 4 seed St. Francis Brooklyn in the quarterfinals.

This year's NEC Tournament quarterfinals will take place on Monday, March 10, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, March 13. The championship game is set for Sunday, March 16.
