Women’s Basketball Drops Contest To FDU

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team (5-17, 2-8 NEC) dropped a Northeast Conference matchup to FDU (19-3, 9-0 NEC), 54-41, at the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday.

Graduate student Taleah Washington led the scoring effort with 12 points and seven rebounds while graduate student Julia Fabozzi added nine points and five rebounds. Junior Hawa Balde-Camara tied a career-high she set in the Seahawks last matchup to FDU, 5 blocks. Balde-Camara also added six points and six rebounds to her statline.

Prior to the season, FDU was named the NEC Preseason Favorites and entered the contest winners of eleven in a row.

Wagner came out strong to start the game, leading 15-9 after the first quarter. Fabozzi played a key role early on, knocking down a three-pointer with 4:29 remaining in the opening period to give Wagner the lead. The team's defense was solid, and they were able to hold onto a slim advantage as the first quarter came to a close.

In the second quarter, the Seahawks stretched their lead to 10 points with 1:12 left in the half. Fabozzi fought for an offensive rebound and put back her own miss, giving the Seahawks their largest lead of the game at 26-16. FDU closed the half with a bucket, narrowing the deficit to 26-18 at the half.

The Seahawks held the Knights to just 21% shooting in the first compared to their normal 66% average.

FDU came out of the locker room on fire, opening the second half with an 18-0 run. The Knights forced 10 turnovers in the quarter alone and by the end of the third, the Green & White found themselves trailing 40-33.

The fourth quarter saw FDU extend their lead, taking their largest advantage of the game, 54-39, with 3:12 left. Despite a strong effort from Wagner to keep fighting, they were unable to make up the deficit, and FDU closed out the game with a 54-41 victory.

Next up, Wagner will host Le Moyne for a 7 PM tip-off, for the Seahawks Play4Kay game.
