Chapel Hill, NC - The Wagner College Softball team dropped its double header at UNC on Sunday, February 23.
The Seahawks would fall to West Georgia 7-3 in the seventh inning before dropping their second game by the host, University of North Carolina with a score of 11-0.
Game 1 Results: Wagner 3, West Georgia 7
Wagner took control of the game early by scoring the first three runs to start the game before the Wolves started to make a run for themselves.Â
In the first inning, with two runners on base, junior Payton Janicki reached on a fielder's choice, and then stole second. Sophomore Sydnie Trujillo reached on a fielder's choice that brought both Janicki and junior Geanice Morales home. A few batters later, Trujillo advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, sophomore Lelilani Gonzales reached on a fielder's choice to bring Trujillo home for the Seahawks third run of the game.
After an amazing start by scoring three runs in the top of first inning, West Georgia proceeded to add two runs to end the inning.Â
The Seahawks couldn't contain the Wolves momentum as they went on to score three runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning. West Georgia left Wagner scoreless the rest of the game as the Seahawks fell 7-3.
Senior Dallas Garcia took the loss, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits, with four walks and one strikeout. Junior Emma Crosby came in relief, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Game 2 Results: Wagner 0, UNC 11
In game two against the Tar Heels, Wagner struggled offensively, with no hits or runs in five innings of play. Despite strong defensive efforts, including Morales leading the team in putouts with three at first base, they could not capitalize on any opportunities. The team struck out a total of four times and left five runners on base. Karson Zavala took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing seven runs on six hits. Sophia Schmeglar and Dallas Garcia also saw time on the mound, with Schmeglar allowing four runs in just 0.1 innings. Garcia finished with a scoreless 0.2 innings.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, February 28 as they will be heading to Minneapolis, MN to participate in the Gopher Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium.
