Men’s Basketball Falls at Maryland to Close Road Stretch

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Wagner College men's basketball team wrapped up its seven-game road stretch on Tuesday night, falling 89–63 to Maryland at the XFINITY Center.

Wagner (1–6, 0–0 NEC) held an early 21–20 lead in the first half after a three-pointer from senior Sam Smith, but Maryland (6–3, 0–0 Big Ten) responded with a 13–5 run to close the half and take a 33–26 advantage into the locker room. The Terrapins carried that momentum into the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 56–37 over the final 20 minutes.
Junior Nick Jones led Wagner with 16 points, adding two rebounds and two steals while going 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Redshirt-senior Jaden Baker followed with 13 points and seven rebounds, knocking down three three-pointers. Graduate student Sam Smith earned his first start of the season and posted 10 points and six boards, including two made threes.

Wagner shot 83 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-18) and collected 37 rebounds, but Maryland converted 32-of-45 free throws and scored 40 points in the paint.

Next, the Seahawks will host Bryant & Stratton–Albany on Saturday, December 6, for the home opener inside the Spiro Sports Center. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
