Men’s Basketball Opens Home Slate with Commanding 92–36 Win Over Bryant & Stratton–Albany

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College men's basketball team rolled past Bryant & Stratton–Albany, 92–36 at the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

Wagner (2–6, 0–0 NEC) controlled the afternoon from the opening minutes, using a 31–6 start to build an early double-digit cushion behind a right-wing three from junior Michael Cooper and a transition layup from junior John Awoke.

The Seahawks overwhelmed the Bobcats (2–2) defensively throughout the first half, holding the visitors scoreless for nearly four minutes and limiting them to just 12 percent shooting. Sophomore Zavier Fitch closed the half with a transition layup to send Wagner into the break with a commanding 43–13 advantage.

The second half opened much like the first. Graduate forward Sam Smith scored on a jumper and drilled a corner three to push the margin to 48–15. Redshirt-freshman Makhai Anderson followed with a two-handed fastbreak dunk at the 17:59 mark as the lead grew to 50–15.
Wagner kept its foot down from there. Smith added another put-back and mid-range jumper, junior Eddie Placer knocked down a right-wing three for a 72–22 lead with 9:50 remaining, and Awoke connected from deep to make it 79–28 at the 6:58 mark. Fitch punctuated the afternoon with a two-handed dunk off a feed from Placer to extend the cushion to 86–28 with just over five minutes left.

Smith delivered a dominant performance, finishing with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks on 10-of-15 shooting. Sophomore Binael Basil added 17 points, six boards, and two steals, while Anderson posted 15 points and four rebounds behind a 9-of-10 showing at the line in his first career start. Fitch contributed 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and redshirt-senior guard Jaden Baker dished out 12 assists to lead the offense.

Defensively, the Seahawks held Bryant & Stratton–Albany to 13-of-70 shooting (18.6 percent) and just four made threes while dominating the rebounding margin 65–26.

The victory marks Wagner's ninth straight home-opening win.

Wagner returns to the floor next week, hosting Bloomfield College on Thursday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m.
