Dover, DE – The Wagner College football team earned a wire-to-wire 30-7 victory at Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 1-2 on the year.
In his first start in a Seahawk uniform, graduate student quarterback
Jake Cady completed 18 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a score.
Wagner took the early lead on the ground, as senior running back
Rickey Spruill scored from 60 yards out on the first play from scrimmage to put the Seahawks on top 7-0.
Leading 10-7 at the half, the Seahawks outscored the Hornets 13-0 in the third quarter to take over the contest.
After Cady found sophomore
Jaylen Bonelli for a 40-yard touchdown to make it 17-7, Wagner's defense delivered a big play, as sophomore
Zachary Ricci came up with a red zone interception and a 64-yard return to set the offense up with great field position.
The Seahawks capitalized, as Cady connected with sophomore
Teree McDonald for a seven-yard touchdown to put Wagner up 23-7.
Wagner's final score of the afternoon was once again set up by its defense, as an interception by junior
Jordan Johnson set up a three-yard rushing touchdown by Cady.
Spruill led Wagner's ground attack with 143 yards on 15 attempts, while Bonelli paced Wagner with seven catches for 117 yards.
