Staten Island, NY - Wagner College women's soccer head coach Phil Casella has announced the team's captains for the 2024 season with graduate student Kayla Barbosa and senior Emma Roe taking on leadership responsibilities.
"It's great to announce Kayla Barbosa and Emma Roe as our 2024 captains," Casella said. "I have always said I want captains who are great leaders, role models, able to communicate and people I can trust. What they can do on the field is simply amazing, but to me, a captain is also being a great representative of Wagner off the field and in the classroom.
This is the second consecutive season that Barbosa has been named captain. In 2023, the Hackettstown, NJ, native helped guide the Seahawks to their first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship game appearance. Barbosa started in all 19 games she appeared in last season and contributed four goals — two of which occurred during the postseason.
Roe, a four-year veteran with 55 appearances to her name, has been named captain for the first time in her career. She saw action in all 20 games last season and drew 14 starts for the Seahawks. Roe scored her lone goal of the 2023 season at Stonehill on October 8.
"[Kayla and Emma] are also players that their teammates feel comfortable with as leaders," Casella said. "When you speak and see them, you know what Wagner soccer is all about."
