STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wagner women's soccer earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Hameline Field against Seton Hall on Thursday night, as the Seahawks turned in a resilient defensive effort led by goalkeeper
Abigail Marcello.
The sophomore keeper was sharp between the posts, recording three saves to secure her first collegiate shutout. Marcello's calm presence anchored a backline that stood tall against a Pirates squad that generated nine corner kicks and held a slim edge in possession.
On the other side of the pitch, Wagner created its share of chances, outshooting Seton Hall 6-5 overall and putting all six attempts on frame.
Caroline Kessler,
Alana Arjona,
Deirdre Meberg,
Hailey Knapp,
Anayah Rivera, and
Riley Frederick each tested the Pirates' keeper, but Katherine Kleinsmith turned away all six shots to keep the match level.
The midfield battle was tightly contested, with both teams committing eight fouls apiece and neither side able to break through in the final third. Despite late pushes from the Seahawks, including a quality look from
Riley Frederick in the 83rd minute, time ran out before either team could find the decisive goal.
With the result, Wagner moves to 1-1-4 on the season, while Seton Hall shifts to 3-1-3. The Seahawks will play again next week opening NEC play against CCSU in New Britain, Connecticut at CCSU Soccer Field. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
