Women's Soccer Shutout Mercyhurst for First Conference Game Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Wagner women's soccer earned its first Northeast Conference game victory of the season with a convincing 3-0 win over Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.

The Seahawks wasted no time taking control, as junior miedfielder and captain Alana Goldsmith opened the scoring in the 8th minute with her first goal of the year. Just ten minutes later, sophomore midfielder Deirdre Meberg doubled the lead, finishing off a pass from sophomore forward Kelly Gallagher to give Wagner a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime.

In the second half, sophomore forward Alana Arjona added her second goal of the season in the 50th minute, assisted by sophomore forward Anayah Rivera, to put the match out of reach.

Wagner dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Lakers 18-2 while holding 60% of possession. Gallagher led the attack with six shots, while Goldsmith, Meberg, and Arjona each found the back of the net. In goal, senior Shae McGinty made one save to secure her second shutout of the year.

With the result, Wagner improves to 2-1-5 overall and 1-0-1 in NEC play, while Mercyhurst falls to 0-8-2 (0-1-1).

Next time the Seahawks will be competing is on Thursday, September 25, against Howard University on Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C. at 7PM.
