Field Hockey Set To Open 2024 Season

The Wagner College field hockey program will begin the 2024 season against La Salle on Friday, August 30 at 3:00 pm.

2023 Recap

The Seahawks concluded last season by winning four consecutive conference matches to earn the fourth-seed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. After upsetting the top-seeded Fairfield Stags in the semifinal round, Wagner lost to Sacred Heart, 1-0, in overtime of the NEC Championships. 

Overall, the Seahawks concluded the regular season with a 6-12 record, and a 4-3 mark in conference play. Over the course of their final six games, the Green & White outscored opponents 13-6. 

Wagner placed two players on All-Conference teams last season as senior Emma Lofstedt received first team honors, while sophomore Charlotte Müller earned second team honors.
 

New On Grymes Hill

Head Coach Aubrey Mytych will begin her career as a member of the Seahawks along with Assistant Coach Cam MacGillivray, who both come to Wagner after a playing career at Old Dominion. 

Along with Mytych and MacGillivray, the Seahawks added six freshmen and two transfers to their roster, along 19 returners, bringing the team total to 27 student-athletes. 

Erika Parker, Sydney Kowalczyk, Mia Bolster, Romy Matthies, Evie de Baar, and Saar van Dalen make up the freshman portion of the Seahawks' 2024 roster.

Graduate student Cami Valor most recently played at Hofstra, appearing in 64 games and starting 28. The Rosario, Argentina native scored five goals while dishing out six assists during her playing career with the Pride.  

Junior Claire Evans spent last season at UMass Lowell, appearing in three games for the River Hawks logging 68 minutes of gametime.
 

Returning Production

Senior Emma Lofstedt and junior Charlotte Müller were named to the Northeast Conference's (NEC) First and Second-Teams, respectively, at the conclusion of the 2023 season. 

Lofstedt leads all returners in points scored last season with 12 after earning four goals and adding four assists throughout last season's campaign. The Durban, South Africa native also led the Seahawks with 27 shot attempts, 15 shots on goal, and two defense saves.

Loftsedt scored three of her goals and dished out two of her assists against conference opponents. 

Muller, sophomore Matilda Heisel, and sophomore Pilar Lorenzini return after each playing more than 500 minutes last season. 

Lorenzini concluded her freshman year with three assists, the second highest mark on the roster. 

Sophomore Floortje Leunisse, senior Rebecca Desiderio, and junior Haley Copestick round out the rest of the returning Seahawks who scored a goal during the 2023 season.

Sophomore Puck Schenk logged 675 minutes over 13 games in goal for the Seahawks during her first year on Grymes Hill. Schenk made 11 starts and ended the year with a 6-5 record, highlighted by a shutout against Stonehill. Schenk led all goalkeepers with 47 saves and a 72.3% save percentage. 

Along with Schenk, junior Sam Black and senior Sam Trask return in net for Wagner. Black played for 325 minutes during her sophomore season, saving 37 shots throughout six games.

Trask appeared in two games, making one start, saving a total of five shots for the Green & White in 2023.

Graduate student Karoline Policarpio, senior Devin Bailey, juniors Abby Reenock, Hailey Bianchino, Maddie Ciancitto and sophomores Natalie McGivern, Lauren Frye, Victoria Bruno, and Ashton Kolmansberger all return for another season as a Seahawk.

Preseason Poll

Wagner was predicted to finish third in the 2024 NEC Preseason Poll. This is the fourth straight season that the Seahawks have been picked in the top-three of the annual poll.

The Seahawks trail only Fairfield and Sacred Heart in the list. Rider, Saint Francis U, LIU, Stonehill, Merrimack, and Mercyhurst rounded out the rest of the poll.

About La Salle

For La Salle, this matchup is the first game of the Explorer's 2024 season. La Salle finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 13-6, including a 5-2 mark in A-10 play. Last season, La Salle finished the season with an away record of 7-4. 

Next Up

After their matchup against La Salle, the Green & White will travel to Lehigh for their first road matchup of the season on Sunday, September 1. That game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
