Staten Island, NY - Behind a solid defensive showing, the Wagner women's soccer team drew Rider in its season opener, 0-0, at Hameline Field on Thursday evening.
The entire backline of senior Kylie McNally, junior Faith Andree, and freshman Hailey Knapp, along with senior goalkeeper Sam Hughes, played all 90 minutes. Hughes collected five saves on the night as her and the backline prevented the Broncs from breaking through.
The Seahawks started off fast, with senior Olivia Rubbo forcing in two shots in the early going of the first half. But Rider responded, evening the playing field and attempting a pair of shots as the half neared its end.
In the second half, both offenses ramped up the aggressiveness, with Wagner holding a slim 7-6 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes. In the end, neither team could break through, resulting in an opening match tie for both squads.
Sophomore Caroline Kessler joined the Green & White defense with 90 minutes played.
Rubbo led all players with five shot attempts, including four on goal.
Wagner will travel west for its next matchup against Big 12 member Arizona State. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 pm EST.
