Poughkeepsie - The top-seeded Wagner College women's water polo team defeated Marist by a score of 9-8 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship title game.
After the first quarter, the Seahawks trailed the Red Foxes 4-2. Eventual MAAC Tournament MVP senior Andrea Arias tallied both of Wagner's goals in the opening frame.
In the second, the Green & White held Marist scoreless while finding the back of the net four times themselves. Sophomore Magali Ogg and senior Andrea Arias both scored one goal a piece in the second.
Junior Carlota Alonso added two goals to grant the Seahawks a 6-4 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Marist outscored Wagner, 2-1. The Seahawks held onto a one-point lead heading into the final stanza of Championship weekend. Carlota Alonso scored the lone goal for the Green & White, and her 112th of her junior season.
Alonso would not be finished as she added one last goal in the fourth to bring her game total to four.
Senior Grace Coleman scored a timely goal in the final quarter to help lift the Seahawks over the Red Foxes by a score of 9-8.
In net, All-MAAC First Team selection sophomore Francesca Sena played the entirety of the Championship match for the Green & White.
For the Seahawks, this is their eight conference crown in the last 11 seasons. Most recently, Wagner obtained the 2022 MAAC Water Polo Championship title with a 18-7 victory over LIU where senior Mar Navarro was named the MAAC Tournament MVP.
At the 2024 Championships, Andrea Arias was tabbed as the MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Mar Navarro and Carlota Alonso were named to the All-Tournament team.
Wagner will find out its NCAA Tournament destiny tomorrow, April 29 on the NCAA selection show at 8:00 P.M.
