#18 Women's Water Polo Falls To #16 Princeton In Overtime

Princeton, NJ - The Wagner College women's water polo team competed in its final non-conference match-up of the season against the #16 Princeton Tigers at the DeNunzio Pool on Thursday, March 28.

Prior to this match-up, the Seahawks had won their tenth consecutive game for the second time this season, with a 13-10 win over LIU on Sunday, March 24 in Brooklyn.

The Seahawks held a 5-3 advantage over the Tigers after the first quarter. Current MAAC Offensive Player of the Week junior Carlota Alonso was responsible for two of the goals in the opening frame. Alonso's two goals were accompanied by two scores from senior Mar Navarro and one from sophomore Magali Ogg. In the second quarter, Wagner was held scoreless as the two teams went into halftime tied up at five a piece.

In the third quarter, Ogg scored her second goal of the game about one minute into the frame. The Seahawks would score four in the quarter, and head into the last quarter of play with a 9-8 lead. Along with Ogg, Alonso, senior Andrea Arias, and freshman Ana Arias were responsible for the other three scores for Wagner. In the fourth, Navarro and Arias would score their third and second goals of the contest, respectively. Princeton would manage three goals in the fourth, including the game-tying goal with seven seconds remaining by Olivia Krotts.

In overtime, the Tigers outscored the Seahawks by a score of 2-1. Alonso scored her fourth goal of the game near the end of the first overtime period. 

Additionally, Alonso would finish the game with five steals. Andrea Arias would add three blocks and two steals to her two goals throughout the game.

In net, sophomore Francesca Sena would play the entirety of the contest for the Green & White. The Cosenza, Italy native would deny seven shots while adding two steals and one assist.

 

The Seahawks faced off against the Tigers in the middle of their conference gauntlet. Wagner has only five games left in its 2024 regular season.

On Sunday, April 7, Wagner will play against LIU and Iona at the Pavillion Pool in Villanova, PA. After that, the Green & White will face off against VMI on Saturday, April 13 and La Salle and Villanova on Sunday, April 14 at the Kirk Pool in Philadelphia, PA.
