Columbus, OH - Freshman Flavio Vinci of the Wagner men's fencing team came in 13th place at the NCAA Championship, hosted by Ohio State, this weekend.
Vinci just missed out on a top-12 finish and All-American status, but placed as the third-highest freshman behind Ohio State's Luca Fioretto, the runner-up on the men's sabre competition, and Yale's Jordan Silberzweig.
Wagner's first ever representative at nationals picked up 11 total victories to earn the top-15 finish.
Vinci began Saturday with a 4-3 mark through his first seven matchups, defeating fellow top-15 finisher in Brandeis's Antonio Escueta to win three of his last four matchups in the first session.
In the next grouping of matchups, Vinci dropped three of four to move to 5-7 on the day. But the freshman finished strong with a 2-2 record, including a victory over top-15 finisher Matthew Limb of Princeton.
Vinci also picked up a pair of victories against two semi-finalists in Fioretto and Wayne State's Eyad Marouf. Vinci made quick work of Marouf, 5-0, before battling Fioretto to a 5-3 victory.
