#18 Women's Water Polo Defeats La Salle And Villanova On Senior Day

Staten Island, NY -  The Wagner College women's water polo program honored one graduate student and three seniors prior to a 17-11 victory over Villanova.

The Seahawks welcomed La Salle and Villanova to the Spiro Sports Center for a round robin tournament that also included LIU and VMI. On Sunday, March 24, Wagner will travel to LIU to complete its weekend against the Sharks and Keydets.

Graduate student Pip Nash, senior Grace Coleman, senior Mar Navarro, and senior Andrea Arias were recognized for their efforts and achievements during their career on Grymes Hill.

 

Game 1 Results: #18 Wagner 19 - La Salle 14

The Seahawks and Explorers were tied after the first quarter. Navarro put away the first for Wagner two minutes into the game, as junior Carlota Alonso scored her 74th goal of the season halfway through the first frame. In the second quarter, Wagner and La Salle traded goals before the Seahawks scored the last four of the half, and headed into the third quarter with an 8-4 lead. Alonso added two more goals in the second, Arias also scored two goals in the frame. Navarro scored her second of the contest.t.

In the third quarter, Navarro increased her scoring totals to five, as she found the back of the next three times in eight minutes. Alonso would also continue not to be denied, as she scored her fourth of the contest towards the end of the quarter. Coleman and sophomore Magali Ogg added their names onto the scorecard with their first goals, respectively. Heading into the fourth quarter, the score stood at 15-9, Wagner. In the final quarter of play, it was Arias' turn to score three goals in one quarter, as she finished the game with five goals. Also in the fourth, Nash scored her second goal of the game while Alonso scored her fifth. 

Additionally, Navarro and Ogg finished the game with five and four assists, respectively. Alonso also added five steals while Arias drew eight exclusions.

In net, current MAAC Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Francesca Sena denied 14 shots with one steal.

 

Game 2 Results: #18 Wagner 17 - Villanova 11

Wagner and Villanova would trade goals during the opening quarter of play, as the Seahawks scored the last two of the frame to head into the second with a 5-4 advantage over the Wildcats. Alonso would be responsible for three of the five goals during the first. Andrea Arias scored her sixth goal of the day, while junior Casey Taylor found the back of the net for her first time of the day. In the second quarter, the Green & White outscored Villanova 5-1. For the second-straight game, Arias would score three goals in one quarter. Alonso would score her fourth in the second as Taylor also scored one, bringing her game total to two. Heading into the half, Wagner held a 10-5 lead.

The Seahawks outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the third, Alonso ended her day with two more goals, bringing her game total to six and her day total to 11. Fellow Spaniard Andrea Arias ended her day with 10 goals as she scored one in the third. Freshmen Maylen Sampedro Tarela and Catherine Mentz scored the final two goals of the quarter for the Seahawks. In the final quarter of the day, Navarro and freshman Ana Arias were responsible for the last two goals for Wagner, as the Seahawks would prevail over the Wildcats, 17-11.

Additionally, Nash contributed two assists and three steals. Ogg, Navarro, and Alonso all chipped in three assists as well.

In net, Sena saved seven shots with one steal. Freshman Jillian Hemming entered the game with 5:38 left in the fourth quarter. She finished the game with one steal and one save.

Next up, Wagner will conclude its weekend in Brooklyn against LIU and VMI on Sunday, March 24 at the LIU Pool.
