Ocala, FL - Select members of the Wagner men's and women's swimming & diving teams competed at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship from Thursday to Saturday this past week, with freshman Jasu Ovaskainen making the finals of the 100-yard butterfly event.
After helping the Seahawks to a Northeast Conference (NEC) championship, Ovaskainen recorded a time of 47.72 in the preliminaries to clinch a spot in the finals. In the final round, the standout freshman came in eighth place with a time of 47.52.
Ovaskainen also came in 21st place in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 22.15 and 26th place in the 100-yard IM with a time of 50.60.
Sophomore Aura Vilarrasa came in 38th place in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 26.38. In the 100-yard backstroke, Vilarrasa came in 26th place with a time of 56.13. She placed 28th in the 200-yard backstroke.
Fifth year Olivia Bishop, in her final collegiate event, placed 52nd in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.19. Freshman Manuel Chavez Villalpando placed 27th in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:51.91.
Sophomore Joel Knaapi placed 36th in the 50-yard breaststroke event, finishing with a time of 25.83. Knaapi also came in 46th place in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Ovaskainen, Knaapi, Villalpando and freshman Enrico Mancardo, recorded a time of 3:20.57 to come in 21st place in the event. The quartet finished in 25th place in the 200-yard medley relay.
Overall, the Seahawks finished 30th out of 36 teams at the CSCAAs.
