Staten Island, NY - The Wagner fencing program hosted the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational on Sunday at the Spiro Sports Center. Both the men's and women's teams went 3-1 on the day, with both losses coming against top-ranked Columbia.
In the opening match against Vassar, the tandem of sophomore Fanny Straub and freshman Morrigan Adams shined. They each went 3-0 to help guide the sabre team to a 6-4 victory, which proved vital to the overall 16-11 result.
While both teams lost to Columbia in the next round, the women's épée team of freshman Natalja Stiller, sophomore Sofia Lopez Meneses and junior Katerina Cervenkova rattled off three straight wins to pull off the 5-4 victory over the Lions.
On the men's side, the sabre team of freshmen Theodore Huston, Charlie Dolan and Flavio Vinci knocked off the Lions, 5-4. Vinci supplied three wins the match,
The sabre team kept its winning ways going against Lafayette as they swept the Leopards, 9-0.
Lastly, in the Green & White matchup against Drew, both sides rose to the occasion.
For the women, a pair of 7-2 victories by the épée and sabre squads plus a 5-4 edge by the foil squad helped propel the Seahawks to a convincing 19-8 victory.Â
For the men, after the épée squad emerged victorious, 7-2, the sabre squad needed to win four straight matches to earn the 14-13 victory. Huston, Dolan and Vinci all played a part in the big comeback victory for the Seahawks to close out the event.
The Seahawks will close out their regular season at the Shark Tank Challenge, hosted by LIU, on Sunday, February 25.
