#19 Women's Water Polo Defeats Bucknell And #22 SDSU At Princeton Invite

Princeton, NJ - The Wagner women's water polo team extended its win-streak to 10 straight games after gaining victories against Bucknell on Saturday, February 17 and #22 San Diego State University on Sunday, February 18 at the Princeton Invite. 

The Seahawks would face-off against the Bison for the third time this season. The previous two occasions saw Wagner come away with the win, by an average score of 13.5 to 5.5. 

Sunday's match-up between Wagner and SDSU was the first of the 2024 campaign.

 

Game 1 Results: #19 Wagner 15 - Bucknell 5

The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one quarter. Junior Carlota Alonso got the ball rolling with the first two goals of the game. Within the final 1:30 of the first quarter, graduate student Pip Nash, senior Andrea Arias, and junior Lizzy Koerper all scored to extend Wagner's lead heading into the second quarter. Arias and Nash would both find the back of the net in the second, as Wagner maintained their lead into halftime, 7-1. 

In the second half, the Green & White would score four goals in both the third and fourth quarters, meanwhile the Bison would score three in the third, and one in the fourth. Nash and Alonso both scored in the third, earning themselves hat-tricks within the contest. Junior captain Casey Taylor and freshman Maylen Sanpedro Tarela would both score their first of the game in the frame. In the final quarter, Sanpedro Tarela netted her second, Alonso scored her fourth, Arias would account for her third goal of the game, and senior Grace Coleman would score her first of the game, and tenth of the season to defeat the Bison, 15-5.

 

Game 2 Results: #19 Wagner 14 - #22 San Diego State University 8

Wagner would hold a 5-2 lead over SDSU after the first quarter of play. Senior Mar Navarro scored the first goal just 15 seconds into the game. The Barcelona, Spain native would also score the final goal of the quarter, bringing her game total to two. Sophomore Magali Ogg would also score twice in the quarter, along with Andrea Arias who netted her first. In the second quarter, Coleman would score her first of the game less than a minute into the frame. Alonso would then score back-to-back goals to round out the first half with a 8-4 lead.

In the third, Coleman would score her second of the contest, as Nash would score her first with less than 30 seconds remaining in the frame. The Seahawks would outscore the Aztecs 4-3 in the fourth. Arias was responsible for two of the goals, scoring her second hat-trick in as many games during the weekend. Freshman Ana Arias and sophomore Genevieve Bland would put the game out of reach, both scoring within the final half of the quarter, as Wagner would prevail, 14-8.

 

In goal, back-to-back MAAC Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Francesca Sena spent all eight quarters in net for the Seahawks. The Cosenza, Italy native now has a record of 11-2 on the season.

The Green & White outscored their opponents during all eight quarters of competition at the Princeton Invite.

Next up, Wagner will compete in the Harvard Invitational from Saturday, February 24 to Sunday, February 25 at the Blodgett Pool. There, the Seahawks will face-off against Brown and Santa Clara on Saturday, then Mercyhurst and Harvard on Sunday.
