Men’s Basketball Earns Wire-to-Wire 80-57 Victory Over Le Moyne

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's basketball earned a 80-57 victory over Le Moyne at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday, snapping a three-game losing streak. Sophomore Julian Brown and junior Melvin Council Jr. led the Seahawks with 23 and 21 points, respectively.

It marked the first time since 2022 that two Seahawks scored 20-plus points, as Alex Morales (25) and Will Martinez (21) achieved the feat on February 24 against FDU.

Brown, who poured in a new career-high, connected on seven three-pointers. Overall, the Middletown, NY, native shot 7-for-10 (70%) from beyond the arc, moving him into a tie for fourth place on the all-time Wagner single-game three-pointers made list.

Council scored in double figures for the tenth time in his last 11 games. He shot 8-for-17 (47.1%) from the field while also contributing seven rebounds and five assists.

While Wagner held the lead for the entirety of the contest, Le Moyne began to cut into its deficit near the midway point of the second half.

With 12:01 remaining in the second half, the Dolphins cut Wagner's lead to seven points. But the second of three straight three-pointers fell for Brown, giving the Seahawks a comfortable 57-44 lead that would continue to expand as the game came to a close.

In his Seahawk debut, sophomore Damien Mazil, who was only officially announced as a member of the team hours before tip-off, checked into the game with 1:03 left on the clock and scored his first career points moments later.

Junior Tahron Allen was third on the team in scoring with 15 points, while also collecting ten rebounds for the first double-double of his Wagner career.

The Seahawks started strong and never looked back, forcing the Dolphins into an early timeout after a 6-0 run. Sophomore Keyontae Lewis contributed four of the six points.

The Green & White led by as much as 13 points in the first half before Le Moyne closed the gap to five points, but a late 15-7 run allowed the home team to take a 38-27 lead into the intermission.

Council Jr. had 11 points at the half, while junior Javier Ezquerra dished out six first half assists, clinching his stretch of four or more assists to nine of his last ten contests.

From there, the Seahawks used an energized second half to move to 10-10 (4-4) on the year, while Le Moyne drops to 9-12 (4-3) with the loss.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, February 3, when they travel to Stonehill. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
