Men's Basketball Earns Wire-To-Wire Victory Over Coppin State

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's basketball team defeated the Coppin State Eagles by a score of 65-52 on Wednesday night at the Spiro Sports Center.

With the win, Wagner improves to 4-4 on the young season as Coppin State drops to 0-10.

The Seahawks were led by senior guard Ja'Kair Sanchez, as the Syracuse native scored a season-high 22 on a 63.6% success rate from the field, which includes four made three-pointers. Sanchez also added five rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block to his statline.

Wagner scored the first bucket and never gave up the lead. Senior guard Javier Ezquerra got the game started for the Green & White fast break layup coming off of a junior Keyontae Lewis steal.

Ezquerra would finish the game with a team-high six rebounds and a team-high five assists to go along with nine points.

Wagner would jump out to a 13-3 lead eight minutes into the game, thanks to two early three-pointers from Sanchez.

A 15-7 run by Coppin State made it a two-point contest with six minutes to go in the half, after a successful three-pointer from senior Tyje Kelton and free throws from Lewis and junior R.J. Greene, the Seahawks held a 28-21 halftime lead.

Wagner held Coppin State to a 33.3% field goal percentage in the first half, including a 25% success rate from beyond-the-arc.

The Seahawks started out the second half by extending their lead to 18 in the first five minutes of the period.

During that span, two threes from Sanchez, one from Kelton, one two-pointer from Ezquerra, and one free throw from Greene catalyzed a run that set up Wagner for the remainder of the game.

In the second half, Greene took 10 free throw attempts, making seven. Throughout the entirety of the game, Greene took 14 free throws, making 10 to finish the game with the second-highest point total on Wagner with 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals.

The Seahawks took their largest lead of the game with eight minutes remaining in the second half on a Lewis post-move that resulted in a layup. Lewis finished the matchup with five points and three rebounds.

Additionally, redshirt junior Di'Andre Howell-South, graduate student Zae Blake, and freshman Zavier Fitch also scored for Wagner.

As a team, the Seahawks outscored the Eagles 10-4 in second chance points and shot the ball 4% better from the field and three-point territory than Coppin State.

This game marks the fifth time that the Green & White have held their opponents to under 60 points total.

Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Princess Anne, MD for a matchup with MEAC member Maryland Eastern-Shore on Sunday, December 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
