Men's Basketball Takes Down Maryland Eastern Shore In Gritty 63-61 Contest

Princess Anne, MD - The Wagner College men's basketball team improved its record to 5-4 on the season after defeating Maryland Eastern Shore by a score of 63-61 in both program's inaugural meeting.

With the loss, Maryland Eastern Shore drops to 2-11 overall.

Coming into the game, the Seahawks held the ninth best scoring defense in the nation, allowing only 58.6 points per contest.

In the first half, Wagner held Maryland Eastern Shore to a 8-22 shooting clip, including 1-9 from beyond-the-arc.

The Seahawks and the Hawks traded baskets throughout the first 16 minutes of the game, until a 14-2 run put Wagner up 37-24 to end the first half.

Junior Keyontae Lewis led the Green & White with nine points and four rebounds in the first half. Senior Javier Ezquerra nailed two triples to score six points, including a long-distance three with two seconds left in the half.

Wagner outscored Maryland Eastern Shore in first half turnovers, 7-0. The Seahawks also outscored the Hawks 14-6 in points in the paint and 7-3 in second chance points.

The Green & White extended their lead to 15 early in the second half thanks to a three-point field goal from graduate student Ja'Kair Sanchez.

Maryland Eastern Shore would chip away at Wagner's lead throughout the second half, eventually tying the game at 59 with 1:10 remaining.

Successful trips to the charity stripe by Greene and Sanchez would put the game away as the Seahawks hung on for a 63-61 win. The Hawks had a chance to win or tie, but converted on a layup too late as time had expired, granting Wagner the victory.

Greene led the Seahawks in scoring with 18. The LIU transfer is averaging 16 points per game throughout his last two showings after scoring 14 points against Coppin State on Wednesday.

Ezquerra chipped in 13 points while Lewis added 11 points with seven rebounds. Sanchez, who led the Seahawks against Coppin State, scored nine points while senior Tyje Kelton scored five points while grabbing five rebounds.

As a team, the Seahawks' bench outscored that of the Hawks, 23-12. Additionally, the Green & White shot 13.5% better from three-point-land than Maryland Eastern Shore, making one more three on three less attempts.

Next up, Wagner will continue its road stint with a matchup against NJIT on Saturday, December 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
