Miami, FL - The Wagner College women's basketball team dropped its first game of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic to host-team FIU on Friday afternoon.
The Panthers prevailed by a score of 87-52 over the Seahawks. FIU improves to 2-4 on the young season as Wagner falls to 1-5.
After ten minutes of play, the Green & White held a 15-13 advantage thanks to hot shooting from beyond-the-arc.
Graduate student Julia Fabozzi nailed two trifectas in the opening frame, as redshirt Klea Kaci added her own three-pointer in the first.
Sophomore Liijirin Doyinsola Modesayor and junior Hawa Balde-Camara both added a bucket from close range to round out Wagner's first quarter scoring.
The Seahawks outscored the Panthers in fast break points, 6-2, in the first.
After a scoreless second period, FIU possessed a halftime lead of 41-15. The Panthers earned a shooting percentage of 54.5% on a 12-22 mark from the field in the second.
In the third, freshman Keana Foz led Wagner with six points. Foz added three assists and three steals during the quarter. Fabozzi and junior Angelie Ricard followed closely with five points each.
In the final frame, Ricard scored nine points to bring her second half total to 14. Five other Seahawks found the bottom of the net in the fourth, Foz and Fabozzi both scored three points as Doyinsola Modesayor, graduate student KC Carter, and freshman Elle Johansson all scored two points in the period.
As a team, the Green & White blocked a season-high seven shots while shooting 9-14 from the charity stripe.
Individually, Ricard led all Seahawks with 16 points, Fabozzi followed suit with 15 of her own. Foz added nine with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. This game marks the fourth of the season in which Foz has recorded three or more steals.
Next up, Wagner will face-off against Sacramento State at 11:00 on Sunday, December 1 at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center to wrap up the 2024 FIU Thanksgiving Classic.
