Queens, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team cut the deficit to two points with 10 minutes to play, but it wasn't enough, as #22 St. John's pulled away late for the 66-45 victory on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Trailing 31-22 at the half, Wagner went on an 8-0 run, capped by a basket by senior
Ja'Kair Sanchez, which made it a three-point game at 33-30 with 14:57 to play.
Four minutes later, a traditional three-point play by senior
Zaire Williams and a three by senior
Javier Ezquerra brought Wagner within two at 39-37, but the Red Storm pulled away in the final ten minutes to earn the win.
Ezquerra led Wagner with 10 points, with junior
Keyontae Lewis and senior
Tyje Kelton adding six points each.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 1-2 on the season, while St. John's improves to 3-0 this year.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Seton Hall on Saturday, with tip-off set for noon on FS2.
