Field Hockey Falls In Tough Non-Conference Battle At Drexel

Philadelphia, PA - The Wagner College field hockey fell to No.20 ranked Drexel Dragons in double overtime by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

Wagner's record falls to 10-6 with the loss. This game was the final non-conference game for the Seahawks, concluding the 2024 season with a non-conference record of 4-4.

Just three minutes into the match, graduate student Cami Valor scored her team-leading tenth goal of the year off of a corner insertion from sophomore Charlotte Müller. For Müller, she received her sixth assist of the season.

In the first quarter, Wagner outshot Drexel, 3-2.

Drexel scored shortly after the second period began as the Seahawks and Dragons went into half tied one.

After a scoreless second half, the Green & White totaled seven shots, five on target, and three corner opportunities. Drexel took eight shots, five on target, and earned six corner opportunities. 

For Wagner, this match marked its sixth overtime game of the 2024 campaign, and the fifth overtime game out of the Seahawks' last six contests. 

In the first overtime period, the Seahawks were aggressive, taking four shots and three corners before the Dragons could attain one of either. 

The score remained tied at one, as Wagner entered its second double overtime game of the year. 

Three minutes into the second overtime period, Drexel converted on its second shot of the frame as Anna Castaldo secured the win for the Dragons.

In net, freshman Saar van Dalen played all 73 minutes of the game for the Green & White. The Houten, Netherlands native rejected four shots bringing her season total to 70 saves and a record of 10-6.

On offense, Valor, freshman Romy Matthies, freshman Evie de Baar, junior Pilar Lorenzini, and junior Victoria Bruno all recorded shots on goal during the game.

Wagner's overtime record becomes 4-2, with both losses occurring in the second period of extra time. The Seahawks conclude the year with two separate four game winning-streaks. 

Next up, the Seahawks will take on the Rider Broncs for the conference title on Friday, November 1. Opening pass-back for that match is set for 7:00 pm in Lawrenceville, NJ.
