Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team earned a 71-56 victory over Saint Francis U on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center for the Seahawks' first win in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
The Seahawks never trailed throughout the contest and led by as much as 21 points midway through the second half to secure the victory and move to 1-1 in NEC action, while the Red Flash falls to 0-2 in league play.
Sophomore
Julian Brown led Wagner with 19 points, which tied his career high, while juniors
Tahron Allen and
Melvin Council Jr. added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
The Seahawks got off to a fast start and established their first double-digit lead of the contest just nine minutes in on a traditional three-point play by Brown that made it 17-7 in favor of the Green and White.
With time winding down in the first period, a deep three by
Javier Ezquerra put the exclamation point on an impressive half by the Seahawks to send both teams into the locker rooms with Wagner holding a 37-23 edge.
The Seahawks led by double digits for the entirety of the second period to earn the victory and connected on 24-47 (42.1%) throughout the game, including 13-29 (44.8%) accuracy from long range.
Wagner combined for 15 assists on the afternoon and held a 22-11 edge in points from turnovers.
Next up, the Seahawks will host Stonehill on January 15, with tip-off set for 1:00 pm.
