Staten Island, NY - Behind a complete performance on both ends of the court, the Wagner men's basketball team moved to 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a 64-54 victory over Stonehill at the Spiro Sports Center on Monday afternoon.
The Seahawks shot 46.8% from the field while holding the Skyhawks to 39.6%, including a 29.6% mark in the opening half.
Junior Javier Ezquerra paced the Seahawks with 16 points, while juniors Melvin Council Jr. and Tahron Allen continued their impressive stretch offensively with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Seahawks tallied nine first half assists and five threes in the first period, helping spark a 20-8 run to end the half, with Ezquerra and sophomore Julian Brown leading the way with six points apiece during the stretch. A buzzer-beating three by Brown to end the half gave Wagner a 32-19 advantage at the midway mark. Freshman Seck Zongo also contributed four points in the end-of-half run.
In the second half, Wagner extended its lead, as an Ezquerra layup gave the Seahawks their biggest lead of the contest at 54-33 with 9:52 to play.
With the win the Green & White climb above .500 in both conference (2-1) and overall (8-7) record. Stonehill drops to 2-16 (0-3) with the road loss.
The Seahawks will hit the road for their next contest on Friday, January 19 at Merrimack. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
