New Britain, CT – Limited to just six players due to injury, the Wagner College men's basketball team fell 69-68 in overtime at league-leading Central Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Javier Ezquerra led the Seahawks with a career-high 22 points, 18 of which came on 6-9 accuracy from downtown. Junior
Melvin Council Jr. added 17 points, while sophomore
Keyontae Lewis recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, going into the break knotted up at 33-33. An 11-1 run to start the second half, capped by an Ezquerra three, established a 49-43 advantage for the Seahawks with 10:52 to play. Seven minutes later, another Ezquerra bucket gave Wagner its biggest lead of the contest at 60-51 with 4:00 to play.
The Blue Devils fought back, scoring the final nine points in regulation to force overtime. Wagners lone lead of the extra period came on a basket by Lewis with 1:12 to play, but it wasn't enough, as a late three by CCSU's Kellen Amos gave the Blue Devils the victory.
Wagner held a 39-32 advantage on the glass and converted on 26-62 (41.9%) of field goal attempts on the day, while the Blue Devils converted on 24-56 (42.9) of their shots on the day.
