#20 Women's Water Polo Begins Season With Two Wins At ASU Invitational

Tempe, AZ - The Wagner College women's water polo team opened up its 2024 campaign at the ASU Invitational from Saturday, January 20 to Sunday, January 21 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

At the Invitational, the Seahawks would take on Salem University and #14 Arizona State University on Saturday. The Green & White would then face-off against California Lutheran and #18 LMU to conclude the weekend of competition.

Game 1 Results: #20 Wagner 22 - Salem 7

The Seahawks wasted no time against the Tigers, scoring seven goals in the first quarter, while keeping Salem shutout. Senior Andrea Arias would score the first two goals of the season for Wagner, junior Carlota Alonso would follow with a pair of her own. Sophomore Magali Ogg would also score twice in the quarter, as freshman Maylen Sampredo Tarela scored her first collegiate goal with 37 seconds to go in the first frame. In the second quarter, Ogg and Alonso would both net their third of the contest. Senior Grace Coleman, junior Lizzy Koerper, senior Mar Navarro, and freshman Ana Arias all scored goals in the second quarter. At halftime, Wagner led Salem by a score of 13-1.

In the third quarter, the Seahawks would add seven more goals to their total while only allowing one goal. Ogg and Alonso both collected two more goals, bringing their game totals to five, both leading the Seahawks. Andrea Arias finalized her hat-trick by scoring her third within the period. Graduate student Pip Nash and junior Casey Taylor would put away a pair of their own goals during the third frame. Coleman and Koerper would both score their second goal of the game in the final quarter of the contest, as Wagner would prevail by a score of 22-7.

Game 2 Results: #20 Wagner 10 - #14 Arizona State 16

After one quarter, the Seahawks and Sun Devils were knotted up at two apiece. For Wagner, freshman Ana Arias would score both of the goals in the first. The Seahawks would trail at half by one goal, 6-5. Alonso, Taylor, and Sampredo Tarela all scored in their second-consecutive game with goals during the second quarter. 

Wagner would outscore Arizona State by one, 5-4, in the third period, bringing the score to 10-10 heading into the final stanza of play. Alonso would pick up goals two and three in the third, including a game-tying finish with thirty seconds. Magali Ogg would match Alonso's scoring totals in the frame, finding the back of the net twice. Joining Ogg and Alonso was Andrea Arias in the scoring column, as she scored halfway through the quarter. The Seahawks failed to put any points on the board in the fourth quarter, and would fall to Arizona State, 16-10.

Game 3 Results: #20 Wagner 20 - California Lutheran 6

To begin the second day of competition, the Seahawks jumped out to a 7-1 lead over the Regals after one quarter of play. Alonso would score three goals in the quarter alone. She was joined by Coleman, Taylor, and senior Mar Navarro who scored two in the frame. The Green & White continued to pour it on throughout the rest of the contest; scoring five goals in the second, four in the third, and four in the fourth.

In the second quarter, junior Lizzy Koerper netted two for her firsts of the season. Magali Ogg scored for the third straight contest, along with Ana Arias and Maylen Sampredo Tarela who also scored in the frame. In the third, Coleman scored her second of the game, as sophomore Martina Parisi and junior Emma Stec scored their first points of the season in the quarter. Parisi would score two in the frame, including the final one to make it a 16-4 game. 

Sophomore Maggie Pike scored the final goal for the Seahawks, which was her first of the year. Pike would be joined by Stec and Koerper as the goal scorers for Wagner in the fourth quarter. Koerper would find the back of the net twice, as the Seahawks would prevail, 20-6.

Game 4 Results: #20 Wagner 8 - #18 LMU 9

In the final game of the weekend, the Seahawks would jump out to a 4-2 lead against the 18th ranked team in the country. Andrea Arias scored the first goal less than one minute after the ball-drop, as she would score twice in the quarter overall. Arias was joined by fellow All-MAAC Preseason teammate Carlota Alonso, and Pip Nash, who were responsible for the Seahawks' other two goals. Wagner and LMU would both score two goals in the second quarter. Arias completed her hat-trick midway through the period, as Nash scored her second of the game, and third of the tournament. At halftime, the Seahawks led the Lions, 6-4.

In the second half of play, Wagner would be outscored 5-2. After not scoring in the third quarter, All-MAAC Preseason teammates Alonso and Arias would both find the back of the net in the fourth. Over the final 3:25 of the final quarter, Wagner did not tie the game, and would drop the match 9-8.

In goal, sophomore and MAAC Preseason Goalie of the Year Francesca Sena spent twelve of the sixteen possible quarters in net for the Seahawks. Freshman Jillian Hemming spent the second half in goal against Salem and California Lutheran for the Green & White.

Next up, Wagner will travel to the Bruno Classic from Saturday, February 3 to Sunday, February 4. There, the Seahawks will face-off against Bucknell and Harvard on Saturday, and Pomona-Pitzer and Brown on Sunday.
