Fairfield, CT – The Wagner College men's basketball team led 28-21 at the half, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks fell 66-61 at Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon, snapping their three-game winning streak.
The Seahawks were led by junior
Melvin Council Jr.'s 14 points, with sophomore
Julian Brown adding 13 points. Junior
Tyje Kelton added 10 points off the bench, as Wagner was once again limited to just seven players due to injury.
Both teams went back and forth to start the game, but an 11-0 Wagner run, capped by a layup by sophomore
Keyontae Lewis, put Wagner up 21-16 with 6:07 to play. With time expiring in the first half, Brown drew contact beyond the arc and converted all three free throws, giving the Seahawks a 28-21 lead at the half.
The Pioneers answered in the second half and quickly took the lead. A Brown three from the corner knotted the game up at 53-53 with 3:37 to play, but a late Sacred Heart run decided the game in favor of the Pioneers.
Wagner converted 23-53 (43.44%) of shots throughout the contest, while the Pioneers made 24-49 (49%) field goal attempts, including 16-25 (64%) in the second half.
The Seahawks held a 32-26 advantage on the glass and outscored Sacred Heart 30-20 in the paint.
Next up, Wagner will host Merrimack on Thursday, January 25, with tip-off set for 7:00 pm.
