Men's Water Polo Picks Up Two Victories At Bruno Classic

Cambridge, MA - The Wagner College men's water polo team opened their 2023 season at the Bruno Classic hosted at Harvard University over the weekend.

The Seahawks faced off against MIT and #18 Harvard for the first day of competition, and then McKendree and #11 Pepperdine to round off the second day.
 

Game 1 Results : Wagner 11 - MIT 10

Senior Zsombor Gyemant scored the first goal of Wagner's season just 29 seconds into the game. The Seahawks ended their first quarter with a gentle touch-shot from Eliot Alvarez to put the Green & White up 2-1. Sophomore Laszlo Strasser, junior Andrew Cowie, and junior Luis Camino Sosa all scored their first goals of the season in the second quarter. Wagner and MIT traded goals during the second quarter, with the Seahawks down 6-5 at half.
 

Both Wagner and MIT scored one goal in the third quarter, with Strasser finding his second goal of the game with 1:41 left in the quarter. In the final frame, Wagner outscored MIT 5-3 to come away with a 11-10 victory. Junior Kyle Chambers and senior Barnabas Vidovics both netted two goals in the fourth to tie the game. With 21 seconds left, Laszlo Strasser nailed the game-winner for his third goal of the contest.
 

Game 2 Results: Wagner 3 - #18 Harvard 13 

Strasser scored Wagner's first goal of the game with just over one minute in the first frame. The Seahawks would find the back of the net twice in the second half. Captain Andrew Cowie scored the Seahawks second goal of the game just 1:03 into the third. Junior Kristian Stanczewski found the back of the net for the first time of the young season. The Pennsylvania native scored Green & White's goal with 1:24 left in the game.
 

Game 3 Results: Wagner 17 - McKendree 8

Senior Ryan Lanier produced a hat-trick in the first quarter, with his last coming with eight second left in the opening frame. Laszlo Strasser and freshman Vince Varga found themselves in the scoring column to put the Seahawks up 5-4 after one quarter. The Green & White extended their lead to 8-5 going into half, with Strasser, Vidovics, and junior Angelo Zaina all adding their own goals. 
 

The third quarter saw Wagner score five goals to McKendree's two. Gyemant was responsible for two of Wagner's goals during the third, Chambers and Strasser added to the wealth with their own goals, and junior Mattia Bognolo found the back of the net for the Seahawks. The final quarter saw more of the same with the Seahawks scoring four goals to McKendree's one. Four different Seahawks got involved as Zaina, Varga, Stanczewski, and freshman Maayan Nahari contributed to the scoring column, with a final score of 17-8. 
 

Game 4 Results: Wagner 7 - #11 Pepperdine 15

The Seahawks lead #11 Pepperdine 2-1 after one quarter of competition. Strasser and Nahari each found the back of the net for Wagner. Stasser and Nahari were not done as they both netted a goal in the second, with Strasser adding two in that second frame. At half, the Seahawks lead 5-4. 
 

In the second half, Chambers scored his first of the contest with 6:10 remaining in the third frame. Vidovics also put away his first of the game in the fourth, as Wagner would fall to #11 Pepperdine 15-7. 
 

Next up, Wagner will head to the Princeton Invite from Friday, September 8th to Sunday, September 10th. The Seahawks first game of the tournament is set to begin at 3:30pm against Iona University.
