Staten Island, NY - Freshman Jess Maraia of the Wagner women's soccer team notched her second career multi-goal game in a 2-0 victory over LIU on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
It was a masterful performance from Maraia, whose two goals helped the Seahawks move to 1-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The New City, NY native scored two second half goals within five minutes to put away the Sharks.
After a scoreless first half in which Wagner outshot LIU 13-4, Maraia scored on a corner kick header in the 52nd minute to put the team on the board. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Sara Wiedeman, securing her first points on the season.
Less than five minutes later in the 57th minute, Maraia showed off her hustle by beating the Sharks to a loose ball. Her left-footed shot just barely made it past the outstretched arms of LIU's goalkeeper, putting the Seahawks up two.
Maraia also led the Seahawks in shots, registering a team-high seven on the day.
Junior Kayla Klosen assisted on Maraia's second goal, marking her first points of the season.
The freshman's big day was accompanied by strong defense, with junior Sam Hughes securing her third clean sheet of the season. Hughes made just one save on the day and faced eight shots from the Sharks.
Five Seahawks logged 90 minutes in today's effort, including graduate student Juliana Rafaniello and freshman Caroline Kessler, who were second and third on the team in shots with two and three, respectively.
Junior Claire Janis also notched two shots in the win, making up Wagner's new season-high of 19 shots.
Wagner moves to 3-3-2 (1-0) on the season and will look to continue its run up the NEC leaderboard on Thursday, September 21 against Merrimack at Hameline Field.
