Lewisburg, PA - The Wagner College men's water polo team picked up one victory at the Bucknell Invite this weekend as the Seahawks defeated Johns Hopkins.
Game 1 Results: Wagner 15 - Johns Hopkins 13
Wagner held a narrow lead after the first frame of play as the Seahawks ended the first frame with a 6-5 advantage. Sophomore Laszlo Strasser and senior Zsombor Gyemant each added two goals during the opening quarter. Junior Kyle Chambers and graduate student captain Ben Zovickian also found the back for the Green & White in the opening eight minutes. Wagner extended its lead 10-7 going into halftime, with goals from senior Barnabas Vidovics, senior Ryan Lanier, sophomore Eliot Alvarez, and Chambers.
Lanier and Alvarez both scored their second goals of the contest during the third quarter. Going into the final frame, Wagner held a 12-10 lead. Lanier netted his third of the game, giving himself his second hat-trick of the season. Chambers also scored his third of the game in the fourth, along with junior Mattia Bognolo added his first tally to the Seahawks score. Wagner would prevail 15-13.
Game 2 Results: Wagner 8 - Air Force 16
The Seahawks trailed by three after the opening quarter.Strasser and Gyemant again each tallied goals in the first frame of play. Vidovics would score the lone goal for the Seahawks in the second quarter, as Wagner would be down 10-3 heading into halftime. Lanier added a goal in the third, as freshman Gabe Johnson, freshman Patrick Ray, junior Kristian Stanczewski, and Chambers all contributed to Wagner's scoring column in the final frame of play. The Green & White would drop the second game of the day, 16-8.
Game 3 Results: Wagner 5 - #17 Fordham 14
Wagner held a 2-1 goal advantage to the reigning Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) champions after one quarter of play. Chambers got the scoring started just seventy-seven seconds into the match, with Bognolo breaking the 1-1 tie with 2:30 left in the frame. The Green & White entered the second half trailing 8-3. The Seahawks would outscore the Rams 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but would fall 14-5. Freshman Vince Varga, junior captain Andrew Cowie, and Lanier would find the back of the net for the Green & White in the last frame of the game.
Game 4 Results: Wagner 10 - Salem 14
The Seahawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, junior Luis Camino Sosa scored his first goal of the tournament towards the end of the initial frame. Bognolo found the back of the net twice, and Chambers once for the Green & White. Wagner and Salem went into halftime tied at seven apiece.
Camino Sosa found the back of the net for the second time, as well as Cowie and Vidovics finding their way into the score column before half. Chambers would score twice in the final frame of competition, along with Cowie netting his second of the game. Salem would go on to outscore the Seahawks 7-3 in the second half, as Wagner would fall to Salem 14-10.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Claremont, CA for the Gary Troyer Tournament from Friday, September 29th to Saturday, September 30th.
