Poughkeepsie, NY – The Wagner College women's water polo team suffered a 13-12 loss to LIU in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title game on Sunday afternoon.
Wagner tallied three goals in the first quarter as graduate student
Pip Nash tallied two goals and junior
Mar Navarro found the back of the net once.
Wagner took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. With the game tied at four, sophomore
Carlota Alonso tallied a goal with eight seconds left in the first half to give Wagner a 5-4 lead entering halftime.
Wagner outscored LIU 5-3 in the third quarter behind two goals from
Carlota Alonso. Along with Alonso, graduate student
Malia Josephson, junior
Andrea Arias and senior
Abbey Simshauser also found the back of the net in the third.
Wagner held a 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter before the Sharks outscored the Seahawks 4-1 in the frame. Liu tied the game at 11 with 26 seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Sharks outscored the Seahawks 2-1 in the six extra minutes to preserve the 13-12 victory.
