Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College women's water polo team captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title and a perfect conference mark with three wins this weekend.
The regular season title is the sixth for Wagner since 2015 and the sixth consecutive in a season of competition. The Seahawks' 2020 season was cut short and did not compete in 2021.
In the first game of the weekend, Wagner took care of Villanova 15-4. Junior
Andrea Arias tallied four goals to go along with two assists in the win for Wagner. On the defensive side of the pool, Arias also tallied three steals. Sophomore
Carlota Alonso also chipped in three goals against the Wildcats.
Wagner wrapped up Saturday with a 22-10 win over VMI as 16 different players tallied goals for the Seahawks against the Keydets. Senior
Abbey Simshauser and
Carlota Alonso each tallied a hat trick while Alonso also dished out two assists.
In the final game of the regular season, Wagner defeated LIU 12-8. After trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, Wagner outscored LIU 6-0 in the second to take a 7-2 lead into halftime and would hold on for the victory.
Junior
Andrea Arias led the way offensively for Wagner with four goals.
Wagner wraps up the 2023 regular season with a 30-5 record and a 13-0 mark in conference play.
Wagner will seek its eighth MAAC title in the last 10 years at the MAAC Tournament beginning on Friday, April 28.
