Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Delaware State; Wins Series

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader against Delaware State, winning 14-6 in the first game and losing the second game 13-14.

In Game 1, Wagner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as senior David Melfi lined a double down the left field line in the bottom of the first.

Senior DiMaggio Cazares gave Wagner a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a solo home run. Wagner went on to take on three more runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, David Melfi tacked on his second RBI with a single to give Wagner a 7-0 lead.

Trailing 7-0, the Hornets fought back to cut into the Wagner lead 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning before Wagner quickly added two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Wagner went on to hold on to earn a 14-6 win as David Melfi notched four hits and five RBI's.
Sophomore Connor Hayden picked up the win while freshman Ryan Bilka earned the save.

In Game 2, Melfi earned his sixth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to give Wagner a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Wagner was able to jump out to an 11-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before Delaware State plated seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 13. The Hornets took the lead in the top of the ninth and would hold on for the 14-13 victory.

Despite falling in the second game of the doubleheader, Wagner's offense collected 27 runs as David Melfi finished the day 7-9 with nine RBIs. 

Wagner will be back in action on Wednesday, March 29 when they travel to South Orange, NJ to take on Seton Hall at 4:00 pm.
