South Orange, NJ - The Wagner baseball team lost its mid-week game against Seton Hall, 8-5, on Wednesday.
Wagner chased opposing starter Chris Shine from the mound in the second inning thanks to a pair of doubles from sophomore Mateo Matthews and senior Griffin Selby.Â
After seniors David Melfi and Dante Faicchio reached safely, Matthews drove in a run on a double to right field. A walk from senior DiMaggio Cazares then loaded the bases before Selby sent a double down the left field line to clear the bases.
The Seahawks led 4-0 before Seton Hall's offense got moving in the next two innings. The Pirates jumped out in front after scoring two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. But Wagner responded in the top of the fifth with a game-tying run scored via error.Â
Freshman Ryan Bilka and sophomore Zach Gorman held Seton Hall's offense in check in the middle innings, but the Pirates broke through in the seventh against sophomore Daniel Merkel.
The three runs scored in the inning were the decisive runs in the game. A double play in both the eighth and ninth inning stalled Wagner's attempt at a comeback.
Faicchio and Selby each had three hits in the loss.
The Seahawks next line up for a big three-game series against the first place Central Connecticut State Blue Devils. The two Northeast Conference (NEC) foes will begin play on Friday, March 31 at 3:00 pm.
