Cody Bey Hits Walk-Off Single To Give Baseball 5-4 Win Over Delaware State

Staten Island, NY - Senior Cody Bey of the Wagner baseball team hit a walk-off in Friday's series opener against Delaware State. The win moved the Seahawks to 6-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

Bey's only hit of the game came at the perfect time for Wagner as his deep single to left field scored senior Maimu Kobayashi without any doubt.

Senior David Melfi and junior Ariv Camacho each drove in a run early. Melfi's RBI came in the first inning on a triple to left center, while Camacho scored senior DiMaggio Cazares on a sacrifice fly.

Senior Eric Crouse was solid in his first start of the season, ending his five innings having allowed just one run on four hits. The Hornets, however, tacked on one more run in the sixth inning to leave the score knotted up at two.

It was a back-and-forth affair from the seventh inning on. Delaware State took its first lead of the day in the top of the seventh with a single down the left field line. But Wagner promptly responded as Kobayashi doubled in Camacho.

The Seahawks coughed up the lead in the next half inning, but once again they responded. A walk from sophomore Mateo Matthews set up fellow sophomore Matthew Kenney with a clutch two-out double to tie it up at four.

Kenney finished the day with a team-high three hits.

Sophomore Daniel Merkel then threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning, which included an impressive snag in right field by senior Dante Faicchio, to set up Bey with the walk-off.

It was clutch hitting, fielding and pitching that earned the Seahawks their sixth conference win of the season. They'll look to make it seven on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Game 2 of the weekend series against Delaware State.
