Baseball Edges St. John's on Wednesday at Home

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team earned its first home victory of the season on Wednesday against St. John's.

Timely hitting and baserunning resulted in three runs in the first three innings for the Seahawks.

After senior Cody Bey reached aboard safely and stole second in the first inning, senior David Melfi singled through the gap to score in the speedy Bey. The next inning, senior DiMaggio Cazares took an 0-2 pitch to deep left field for a solo shot.

In the third with the bases loaded, the Seahawks took advantage of a wild pitch by Mario Pesca to score their third run of the game. While the Red Storm responded in the next half inning to make it a 3-1 game, Wagner's pitching held off St. John's.

Each of Wagner's five pitchers allowed just one hit. Freshman Jason Masick followed starting graduate student John LaPointe. Senior Jagger Duquette came out after Masick before freshman Ryan Bilka and graduate student Alec Burnett finished out the game.

In the ninth inning junior Chris Conniff, who previously played for St. John's, came up with a crucial force play at second to cut into the Red Storm's momentum. Burnett was able to work around a walk thereafter to earn his second save of the season.

Conniff tallied two hits and a walk against his former team. Bey and Cazares joined Conniff with multi-hit efforts.

Wagner will remain in Staten Island for its next series against Delaware State, with Game 1 of the three-game weekend series beginning at 3:00 pm on Friday.
