Baseball Caps Off Weekend Series Against Fairleigh Dickinson With 6-4 Victory

Teaneck, NJ - The Wagner baseball team withstood another ninth inning rally by Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday to earn a 6-4 victory. Along with capping off the weekend series with a win, Wagner moved to 5-1 in conference play, its best start since starting 9-1 in 2018.

The Knights looked to be mounting a comeback when Luke Cantwell sent his fifth home run of the weekend over the right field fence. But junior Nicholas Hanson quieted the comeback with two straight strikeouts to end the game.

While Hanson earned his second save of the season, sophomore Frankie Wright stayed hot.

Wright fell an inning short of recording his third quality start in a row, but it was nonetheless another solid outing. The Egg Harbor Township native pitched five innings of two run baseball, allowing six hits and striking out five.

Sophomore Daniel Merkel saw action in between Wright and Hanson, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings.

At the plate, it was sophomore Mateo Matthews once again who reigned supreme. Matthews collected five hits on the day and scored three times to help catapult the Wagner offense to a victory.

The quartet of junior Chris Conniff, seniors Maimu Kobayashi and David Melfi, and sophomore Xavier Baker each drove in runs.

The Seahawks will be back in action at home on Wednesday when they take on St. John's at 3:00 pm.
