Mateo Matthews Belts Game-Winning Home Run As Baseball Survives Thriller Against Fairleigh Dickinson

Teaneck, NJ - Sophomore Mateo Matthews hit a game-winning home run in the top of the 11th inning against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday to earn Wagner baseball a hard fought 13-11 victory. The win moved the Seahawks to 4-0 in conference play.

Wagner led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth until the game turned upside down.

Fairleigh Dickinson hit a pair of home runs with one out on the board to send the game to extras. The Seahawks had the momentum snatched from their hands, but the team made quick work in the tenth inning to recapture it.

Senior Cody Bey got things started with a crucial triple to center before senior David Melfi hit a lead-snatching two-run home run. Sophomore Matthew Kenney followed up with another home run on the next at-bat to give Wagner the huge three-run lead.

A hit-by-pitch taken by senior Dante Faicchio extended the lead to four, but the Knights weren't done yet. After cutting the deficit to three on a leadoff homer, the home team knocked a pivotal three-run home run over the center field fence to knot it up at 11.

Matthews' home run finally ended the back-and-forth affair. Senior Griffin Selby reached base and sophomore Xavier Baker pinch-ran, but it didn't matter who was on the base paths as the sophomore connected on a 3-2 pitch to put Wagner up for good.

Freshman Ryan Bilka finished off the outing, earning the save, while freshman Andrew Rucci picked up the exhilarating win.

Wagner secured its seventh road victory of the season, tying last season's total.

Junior Chris Conniff set up the Seahawks early with a first inning home run to left center. After senior Maimu Kobayashi reached aboard via a hit-by-pitch, Conniff hit his second home run of the season to put the Knights in an early hole.

He reemerged in the seventh inning with the score at 6-4. To lead off the inning the junior launched a no-doubter to center field.

Conniff finished the game 3-5 with three RBIs, scoring a run each time he reached base via a hit.

To go along with Conniff's two-run home run, Melfi and senior DiMaggio Cazares continued the first inning burst with back-to-back RBIs to make it 4-0.

The Knights eventually got to starting junior Julian Taudin-Chabot as they cut the deficit to three, but a single by Selby helped push the lead back up to four in the fifth inning.

As sophomore Daniel Merkel took over mound duties, the Knights began to piece together a comeback. Back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth cut the Seahawk lead to two, but the combination of Merkel and junior Nicholas Hanson helped preserve the lead in the sixth.

Up 7-4, Hanson breezed through the seventh and induced a double play in the eighth to move three outs away from the save. But the unthinkable comeback by the Knights led to the extra inning dramatics.

After 11 home runs and several comebacks by the Knights, Matthews hit the 12th and final home run to put the game to a close.

Wagner will be back in action tomorrow against Fairleigh Dickinson at 1:00 pm.
