Teaneck, NJ - The Wagner baseball team suffered its first loss in Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Saturday in a 7-6 walk-off defeat at Fairleigh Dickinson.
After Friday's five home run outing, the long balls kept coming for Wagner on Saturday.
Sophomore Mateo Matthews in particular picked right up where he left off. Following his game-winning home run in the 11th inning of Friday's thriller, Matthews kicked off the second matchup of the weekend with a two-run shot in the second inning.
Wagner didn't stop there as senior Dante Faicchio knocked a solo shot over the right field fence. After runs from both sides, senior David Melfi then joined in on the home run barrage with a two-run shot of his own in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
The Seahawks left the yard three times, but the Knights responded with home runs of their own.
After sophomore Connor Hayden hurled four innings and ceded just one hit, senior Ruben Del Castillo entered the fray. Despite allowing as many hits as Hayden, his lone blemish was a three-run home run that cut the lead to two.
As was the case in Friday's game, Fairleigh Dickinson relied on the long ball to get back into the game, ultimately tying it up at six with a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning.
The Knights held off Wagner's response and eventually won the game on a walk-off bases loaded single in the ninth.
The weekend series is now split one win apiece and will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
