Late Surge By Fordham Hands Baseball A Narrow Loss At Home

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball gave up four runs in the eighth inning to drop a tough battle against Fordham, 10-7. The Seahawks and Rams were knotted up at six runs apiece before Fordham's decisive inning ended Wagner's three-game win streak.

It was a back and forth game for much of the day as senior Dante Faicchio kicked things off with an RBI single in the first inning. Fordham responded with two runs in the top half of the second.

But the Green & White wouldn't trail for much longer. Junior Chris Conniff drew a bases loaded walk to tie it at two in the bottom of the second inning. In the third inning sophomore Mateo Matthews drew a bases loaded situation as well, with the first baseman sacrificing to the pitcher and earning the Seahawks the lead.

The back and forth nature of the game continued in the fourth inning as Fordham retook the lead on a two-RBI double, which followed a game-tying single by the Rams.

Wagner wasted no time earning the lead back again in the next half inning. Senior David Melfi roped a single into left that scored Conniff. The next batter, senior Griffin Selby, drove in Faicchio and Melfi on a double to center to take a 6-5 lead.

But as was the trend for the day, Fordham fought back. The visitors tied the game on sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Freshman Will Saxenmeyer, senior Eric Crouse and sophomore Zach Gorman each pitched two innings before giving way to Del Castillo. After Del Castillo breezed through his first inning, he ran into trouble in the eighth that ultimately gave the game away.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, March 17 against Fairleigh Dickinson at 3:00 pm.
