Hanover, MD - The Wagner baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Coppin State with a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Sophomore Frankie Wright was the catalyst in another win for the Seahawks. After a seven strikeout outing against Dartmouth last weekend, Wright made another splash with 7.1 innings on five hits and seven strikeouts against Coppin State.
Wright induced nine groundouts in the win, but didn't find any run support until the fifth inning.
Senior Maimu Kobayashi drove in the first run of the game on a single to right field. After another single by junior Chris Conniff, senior Dante Faicchio blasted his first home run of the season to left center to break the game open.
Wagner's 4-0 lead would stick as Wright breezed through Coppin State's lineup. After 7.1 innings, freshman Ryan Bilka headed to the mound to close out the game.
Bilka served up a two-run home run on his first pitch, but he settled down thereafter to conclude the eighth. Sophomore Daniel Merkel hung onto the lead in the ninth to conclude the three-game sweep.
Conniff collected his seventh multi-hit game of the season in the victory.
Up next for the Seahawks is a return to SIUH Community Park where they will host Fordham on Wednesday, March 15 at 3:00 pm.
