Masella Announces Changes To Football Coaching Staff

Staten Island, NY – Wagner College head football coach Tom Masella has announced the hiring of numerous assistant coaches to the Seahawks' football coaching staff.

Derek Getchell will take over the defensive line, with Juan Soto serving as the wide receivers coach. Earlier this offseason, Wagner announced the hiring of offensive coordinator Stephen Matos and defensive backs coach Kamau Dumas.

Former Seahawk quarterback Quincy Guy-Barnes will now serve as an assistant on the offensive side of the ball, with Anthony Riccio joining the staff as the video coordinator and defensive quality control coach.

Among the returning coaches, longtime Seahawk assistant Jim Munson will switch to the defensive side of the ball to coach the linebackers while also taking over as the special teams coordinator. Apart from his head coaching duties, Masella will serve as Wagner's defensive coordinator.

"We're excited about our program going into spring workouts," Masella said. "Our coaching staff is comprised of talented coaches with a passion for the game of football who will help us recruit and develop great student-athletes. We're ready to get to work this spring and improve as a football program."

Getchell arrives on Grymes Hill following three years as an assistant football coach at Bentley University and two years as an assistant football coach at Dean College.

Getchell's duties at Dean included coaching the defensive backs and serving as the special teams coordinator. He led a secondary that intercepted 22 passes in 10 games in 2018 and helped the Bulldogs capture the ECFC championship in 2019.

Before joining the coaching staff at Dean, Getchell spent more than a decade as an assistant football coach at the high school level. He began his career at Franklin High School, his alma mater, from 2007-11, and later coached at Archbishop Williams High School (2013-14), Braintree High School (2015) and Attleboro High School (2016-18).

At Bentley Getchell served as LB, DL, and Special Teams Coordinator. He coached the NE-10 DPOY in back to back seasons. Cole McCubery LB 2021, Cedric Dashiel DL 2022. In 2021 the Falcons finished 9-1 in the regular season and made the DII NCAA Tournament.

Getchell received his Bachelor of Science degree in both special education and history from Bridgewater State University in 2019.

Soto brings a plethora of coaching experience to Grymes Hill. He has worked with Saginaw Valley State University, Ventura College, Kent State University, and, most recently, Yale University as an Offensive Quality Control / Wide Receivers Coach.

Soto also brings an abundance of winning experience to Wagner. He has helped bring home conference titles for Ventura College in 2014 (CCCAA), Kent State University in 2021 (MAC EAST), and Yale University in 2022 (IVY).

In the past, Soto has been responsible for inputting and breakdown of film for each opponent, updating scouting reports, updating offensive playbooks, as well as making recommendations on student-athletes based on academic record or team needs.

As a player, Soto played wide receiver during his stint at Ventura College during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Originally from Miami, FL, Soto has earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Saginaw Valley State, as well as his Master's Degree in Sports Administration from Kent State.

In his new role with the coaching staff, Guy-Barnes will continue to assist the quarterbacks.

In 2022, he passed for 173 yards, 114 coming in the season finale at Duquesne. In 2021, Guy-Barnes appeared in two games, earning the start against Merrimack  and throwing for one touchdown while rushing for 60 yards against the Warriors before missing the rest of the season due to injury.

Guy-Barnes earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Administration from Wagner and is pursuing a Master's Degree in Business Administration apart from his coaching duties.

Riccio arrives on Grymes Hill after previously serving as a compliance intern at Ivy League member Brown.

The Wallingford, CT native also spent time as an assistant football coach at Mark T. Sheehan High School, serving as the varsity running backs coach and head freshman coach. Riccio was part of the Connecticut Class S state championship team in 2019.

No stranger to the Northeast Conference (NEC), Riccio holds a Bachelor's Degree in communications from Central Connecticut State University.
