STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner mourns the passing of 1987 National Champion Gordon "Scooter" Whiting, who passed away last week at the age of 58.
Whiting transferred to Wagner after beginning his collegiate career at North Carolina State. The linebacker from New Jersey helped Wagner claim the 1987 national championship.
"Gordon was a great player, person and leader who meant a great deal to Wagner football," said Walt Hameline, former Wagner football head coach and current Wagner Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics/Interim Athletic Director. "As a member of our 1987 national championship team, he represented Wagner with pride and will always be remembered as an important part of our family."
Whiting went on to coach football and boys basketball at his alma mater, Hackensack High School, where he became athletic director in 2021 before retiring two days prior to his passing.
Whiting's services will take place this weekend at Community Baptist Church in Englewood, New Jersey. Visitation hours will be held on Friday, May 29, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with services scheduled for 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Final visitation will take place on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life.
