Stony Brook, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team erased a 16-point deficit to earn a 60-59 victory at Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon.
Down 32-16 with three minutes to play in the first half and trailing 34-21 at the half, the Seahawks outscored the Seawolves 39-25 in the second half to earn the victory. The Green and White connected on 14-26 (53.8%) shots from the field in the second half, including six three-pointers, while holding Stony Brook to 11-27 (40.7%) in the second period.
Juniors
Javier Ezquerra and
Melvin Council Jr. led the Green and White with 13 points apiece, while junior
Zaire Williams led the Seahawks with 11 points in the second half.
A 10-0 run midway thrugh the second half, capped by a Council bucket, got the Seahawks within range at 43-42 with 12 minutes to play. Council then gave Wagner its first lead of the contest at 48-47 with 8:55 to play.
Tied with under four minutes to play, a clutch three by Williams gave Wagner a 58-55 advantage with 3:47 to play. Stony Brook re-gained the lead with two minutes to play, before a pair of free throws by junior
Tyje Kelton put the Seahawks back in front at 60-59. That proved to be the final score, as both teams went the final 1:19 without a score.
With Wagner's first first road victory of the season, the Seahawks move to 3-4 on the season, while the Seawolves fall to 2-5. This marks the third straight win over Stony Brook in as many years.
The Seahawks only recorded six turnovers throughout the contest and had a 15-4 advantage in points from turnovers, as the Seawolves committed 14 turnovers.
Next up, Wagner will travel to Coppin State on Wednesday, December 6, with tip-off set for 7:00 pm.
