Staten Island, NY - Five Seahawks scored in double figures as the Wagner men's basketball team earned its first win of the young season in its home opener on Thursday night with a 83-48 victory over Molloy.
The Green & White never trailed in the contest as all 11 players in uniform recorded three points or more. Junior Melvin Council Jr. led all scorers for the second consecutive game to open the season with 13 points.
Sophomore Keyontae Lewis paced the Seahawks with ten first half points, which came on a perfect 5-5 clip. The Chesterfield, VA native's tally also contributed to the 26 first half points in the paint for the Seahawks.
A tricky and-one layup by Lewis late in the first half clinched double-digits for the sophomore and made it a 40-19 game. Wagner would extend its lead to as large as 25 points before entering the half with a 44-25 lead.
The Green and White controlled the boards for the second straight game, holding a 46-33 rebounding advantage, with junior Tahron Allen leading the way with 12 boards.
Wagner's ability to control the pace of the game was another key piece in the win, finishing the game with just six turnovers and scoring 32 points off of Molloy turnovers.
Head coach Donald Copeland's squad spread the ball around evenly in the home debut as five players scored in double-digits.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, November 14 when they take on the Rhode Island Rams in Kingston, RI at 7:00 pm.
