Women’s Basketball Opens Season At Rutgers

Piscataway, NJ - The Wagner women's basketball team will travel to Rutgers to open the 2023-24 season.

Exhibition Victory
Wagner earned a 118-13 exhibition victory over CCNY on Monday, November 6 at the Spiro Sports Center.

Season Opener Success
Wagner will be seeking its third consecutive win on opening night. Last season, Wagner defeated Manhattan 63-60 in overtime.

Wagner also won the first game of the Terrell Coburn era to begin the 2021-22 season with a 61-49 win at NJIT on November 9, 2021.

NEC Preseason Poll
The Northeast Conference (NEC) head coaches picked the Seahawks to finish third in the league behind defending champion Sacred Heart and Merrimack. 

Sacred Heart was a unanimous choice to win its second consecutive NEC crown. 

The Returners
Senior's Julia Fabozzi, Marisa Sanchez-Henry, and Cyan Dyke, junior's Rakisha Ballinger and Brittney-Shania Etuka, and sophomore's Angelie Ricard and Malia Mpondo.

Julia Fabozzi appeared in all 28 games while making 17 starts. The Staten Island, NY native averaged 7.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Rakisha Ballinger appeared in 24 contests while making four starts. Ballinger averaged 1.1 steals per game and 0.5 blocks per contest.

Marisa Sanchez Henry and Malia Mpondo appeared in 21 games, Angelie Ricard appeared in all 28 games, Cyan Dyke appeared in 19 games last season.

The Newcomers
Wagner's newcomers include Taleah Washington, Semie Brar, Paige Lyons, Shamique Cummings, Drew Jordon, Kiera Edmonds, Maite Lara Garcia, and  Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor.

Graduate Taleah Washington comes to Wagner after stops at Syracuse and Old Dominion. At Syracuse, Washington appeared in 24 contests At Old Dominion, Washington appeared in 39 games while making two starts during the 2021-22 season.

Junior Semie Brar comes to Wagner after transferring from JUCO Laney College. She averaged 19.2 points per game on 49.4 shooting from the field and 39.4 shooting from three. Semie also averaged 4.7 assists per game while being named CCCWBCA All-State.

Junior Paige Lyons comes to Wagner after spending two seasons at East Carolina. As a freshman, Lyons appeared in 14 contests.

At Detroit Mercy during the 2022-23 season, fifth-year senior Matie Lara Garcia saw action in 26 games off the bench. She tallied a season-high 11 points against NIU on November 22, 2022.

Freshmen Shamique Cummings, Drew Jordon, Kiera Edmonds, and Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor round out the Seahawk newcomers.

The Schedule
Wagner's 13-game non-conference slate features five home games at the Spiro Sports Center as non-conference play for the Seahawks will conclude on December 30. The Green & White will begin NEC play at Saint Francis U on January 6.

The Seahawks will travel to Hempstead, NY to take on Hofstra on Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 pm.
