Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College field hockey team earned a 3-1 win over Fairfield in the Northeast Conference (NEC) semifinals on Friday.
Wagner jumped on the board 9:50 into the contest as senior Sophie Giltrap tallied a goal off a penalty corner opportunity. Freshman Pilar Lorenzini earned her first assist of the day on the goal.
Wagner doubled its lead three minutes later as senior Natalie Rocuskie found the back of the net off a pass from Lorenzini. Wagner went on to out shoot Fairfield 3-1 in the first 15 minutes as they took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.
In a scoreless second quarter, Fairfield tallied the lone shot of the frame as the score remained 2-0 Seahawks heading into the second half.
Wagner tallied its third goal of the game 1:19 into the second half after graduate student Madison Hoskins found the back of the net. Hoskins' goal was assisted by classmate Laura Van Hamburg.
Wagner took a 3-0 lead into the fourth quarter as Fairfield tallied its lone goal of the contest 7:20 into the final frame.
The Seahawks went on to hold on for the 3-1 victory.
The victory brings Wagner to the NEC title game for the first time in program history. The win over Fairfield was also the first postseason win for the program.
Wagner will be back in action on Sunday, November 5 when they will take on either Saint Francis U or Sacred Heart at 12:00 pm.
